A story permeated with passion

“I’ve always loved cooking and the myriad of ways you can enhance a dish. My interest in this world began at a young age, when I would cook my own meals out of my pure innate passion.
After the economic crash in the 2000s, I decided to leave my construction company to follow my dream: making olive oil that was good enough to enhance flavour and be my secret weapon in the kitchen! And that is how, after taking many courses and doing a Slow Food masters, I fell in love with this world, quite simply and irrevocably. I began to put my plan into action by finding land that met my needs for producing high-quality olive oil.
Since 2003, alongside my wife Giusy, I have been able to pursue my true passion thanks to our family business, which our daughter Debora has also joined.’’

The philosophy of the 5 C’s

When you enter the world of olive oil, it’s easy to get swept towards the philosophy of the 5 C’s – essentially:

Curiosity — Comprehension — Culture — Craft — Cooking

As such, if you start approaching the world of olive oil out of simple Curiosity and you begin to acquire a greater Comprehension of this ingredient, you then feel the urge to understand it even more and so you take courses to learn about the great Culture of olive oil, which astonishes you so completely that it becomes an almost maniacal worship of the Craft that drives you to bring your own olive oil to friends’ houses or even restaurants. Finally, it is only once this magnificent journey has been completed that you arrive at the knowledge and understanding of the daily need for this culinary enhancer in your Cooking, the great EVO, Extra Virgin Olive Oil. 

Our Terroir

Terraliva sprung to life in the heart of the Hyblaean Mountains in the small hilltop town of Buccheri, in the province of Syracuse, a few kilometres from one of the most beautiful cities in Eastern Sicily, renowned for its art and historical and architectural sites.

Located in a volcanic region 700 metres above sea level, our ancient olive trees benefit from the variation in temperature between night and day, which blesses our plants with a form of positive stress that ensures a superior product with unique sensory properties.

Indeed, on our estates we have ancient native olive cultivars, such as the Tonda Iblea, as well as other minor cultivars including the Nocellara Etnea, the Nocellara del Belice and the Zaituna: these give life to the “experiential monocultivars” that inebriate the senses with their distinctive fragrances of tomato, wild cardoon, medicinal herbs, almonds and dried fruit and nuts.

Simultaneously complex yet harmonious, refined and surprisingly balanced between piquant and bitter, Terraliva olive oils eloquently lend themselves to cooking, not merely as a dressing, but as a flavour enhancer in any dish, bringing a taste of Sicily to your plate, straight from the “Terra delle Alive”. 

Care and attention to detail

Our extra virgin olive oil is made exclusively by cold pressing olives that have been picked by hand. It is certified Organic, IGP Sicilia, Kosher and Halal to respect and meet the needs of the Jewish and Muslim religions, thus ensuring that our olive oil complies with these rules to achieve a completely pure product. Our Cherubino olive oil is also a Slow Food Presidium.

The product’s authenticity, purity, freshness and our respect for the plants are key and what we strive for every day: to achieve this, we pick our olives exclusively by hand without the use of machinery that could damage the fruit and have a negative impact on the following year’s crops. Once they have been picked and placed in ventilated crates, we take the olives straight to the olive oil mill to be pressed by the Protoreattore, a state-of-the-art machine that guarantees a stronger concentration of polyphenols, the most important part of the oil: this gives us a magnificent end product that is filtered, then stored in silos in nitrogen at a controlled temperature and can be traced by its batch number at any time. 

We protect nature

We love the Earth, we respect it and we care about the environment. Since 2003, we have been making organic extra virgin olive oil that is completely free from synthetic chemicals to preserve biodiversity, live in harmony with the surrounding ecosystem and because we hold dear the well-being of each and every one of our consumers and want them to know that the product they put on their tables is extremely healthy and completely natural.

In our own small way, we are trying to protect the planet from the effects of waste and pollution. For this very reason, we screen print most of our bottles to simplify and reduce recycling and usually opt for stainless steel bottles (that can later be reused for other purposes and for personal use) in order to guarantee considerable fuel savings during transport – thus reducing CO2 emissions – thanks to the low weight of the material. 

Bottles that are easy on the oils

For us, every bottle is unique. We bottle them one by one, always looking for the best possible container that is ergonomic and functional – to protect the oil from light and from changes in temperature – but above all, easy on the eyes. As such, we take great care over the packaging of our products and see to every tiny detail: we use Etruscan glass, cobalt and stainless steel bottles, we design our labels by hand using brocade and golden thread, we screen print our bottles and wrap them in fine paper so that… our bottles are easy on the oils!

Completely original, with a unique and customisable design, our bottles are a perfect gift idea for any celebration or a simple dinner amongst friends to experiment and try different olive cultivars and enjoy a unique sensory experience.

Blockchain: for an increasingly traceable and transparent extra virgin olive oil

All our bottles have been certified for years with the Blockchain system, a cutting-edge system capable of telling the story of our product.

By scanning the olive-shaped QR code on our bottles with the camera of your mobile phone, you are brought back to an internet page (translated into your own language) in which all the information about our oil is provided and, in particular , on the entire production process in which the many aspects of our reality, our territory, the method of olive harvesting, the extraction of our EVO, its packaging and our company philosophy are told.

In this way, therefore, it is possible for us to undertake a transparent communication on what we do every day on our farm and on what you buy and bring to your table. Furthermore, through the blockchain system you are completely sure about the traceability of our extra virgin olive oil and that the purchased product is truly authentic, original and unique as it is certified as an absolutely non-falsifiable and verifiable product all over the world!

We certify all our products with this technology because we want to express the quality of our extra virgin olive oil by telling the various steps of our supply chain in maximum transparency to once again guarantee to each of our customers the usual safety and reliability.

The blockchain also represents for us a simple and direct way to talk for the first time with those who, on the shelves of a shop or on the table of a restaurant, find our oil for the first time, to inform them about its properties and origin. and thus discovering our EXTRAordinary Sicilian family history.
